HBCU Bridge Scholarship

What is the HBCU Bridge Scholarship?

  • It is a merit-based scholarship for exceptional students from select HBCUs* who have completed their BA or BS degree. Selected students are invited to study at the University of Chicago for one academic year (three quarters).
  • The Graham School intends to award up to 10 HBCU Bridge Scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year.
  • Students may select from two study tracks: Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters, or Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters.
  • Students will be awarded full tuition scholarships for a maximum of six courses, enrolling in up to two per quarter.
  • Students may take either undergraduate or graduate courses in the following divisions and schools: Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Divinity, Public Policy, Social Service Administration, Law, and Booth School of Business.
  • Students may not enroll in courses through the Pritzker School of Medicine.
  • Students who successfully complete the HBCU Scholarship Program will receive a University of Chicago transcript. Why are we offering this scholarship?
  • The goal is to provide exemplary HBCU alumni with an opportunity to explore new fields of study or delve deeper into academic areas of interest. The scholarships will provide substantive academic experience towards eventual applications to graduate or professional schools.
  • By inviting these exemplary HBCU alumni to engage in courses on our campus, we aim to support the University of Chicago’s mission to foster a culture of diversity and innovation.
  • Introduced in Autumn 2015, seven inaugural HBCU Bridge scholars are currently studying Business, Law, Human Rights, Public Policy, Psychology and Gender Studies. What are the scholarship qualifications?
  • Applicants must have a BA or BS degree at time of matriculation.
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered. What are the academic requirements while in the program?
  • Applicants must complete at least one course per quarter at the “B” grade level or above to remain in the program.
  • Applicants experiencing extenuating circumstances and requiring a Leave of Absence for one quarter or more must continue to work closely with the Program Director and the Dean of Students if they wish to continue in the program.

The Beinecke Scholarship

Student Eligibility

Each year approximately 145 colleges and universities are invited to nominate a student for a Beinecke Scholarship, and up to 20 new scholarships will be awarded. Each school invited to participate in the Beinecke Scholarship Program is permitted to make a single nomination each year.

Students enrolled at a participating institution who are interested in applying for a Beinecke Scholarship should contact their campus liaison for information regarding the procedure to be followed in selecting the school’s nominee.

To be eligible for a Beinecke Scholarship, a student must:

  • Demonstrate superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate career.
  • Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree during the 2024-2025 academic year. “Junior” means a student who is currently enrolled, plans to continue full-time undergraduate study, and expects to receive a bachelor’s degree between December 2025 and August 2026.
  • Plan to enter a research- or creative-focused master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. NOTE: Students in the social sciences who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience or clinical psychology should not apply for a Beinecke Scholarship.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Have a documented history of being eligible to receive need-based financial aid during their undergraduate years, with a slight preference for Pell Grant recipients. Other evidence of meeting this criterion is a student’s history of receiving need-based institutional, state, or federal grants-in-aid. The nominated student will be required to complete and submit a Financial Aid Data Sheet outlining how the student meets this criterion. During the selection process, the amount of financial need will be one of the factors considered, with preference given to candidates for whom the awarding of a Beinecke Scholarship would significantly increase the likelihood of the student’s being able to attend graduate school.

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund

The awards process is highly competitive and is given to outstanding and qualified students who plan to earn a baccalaureate, graduate or law degree from an accredited college or university. The average award is $3,100 per student per semester. Most scholarships are one year, non-renewable unless otherwise indicated and awards are given without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, disability or national origin.

Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Apple HBCU Scholars Program

This comprehensive program offers a summer internship at Apple, an ambassador role on campus, mentorship, and a scholarship for your senior year of study.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) in partnership with Apple is proud to present the Apple HBCU Scholars Program to outstanding students with a minimum 3.25 GPA who will be graduating between December 2017 and May 2018. Selected Scholars will participate in a 12-week internship during the summer before their senior year, and will receive up to $25,000 in scholarship funding based on individual financial needs that will be applied to their final year of study. Each scholar will have an Apple mentor throughout their experience, receive an opportunity to develop key skills, enhance their resumes, and help launch their careers through hands-on experience gained at one of the top tech companies in the world. National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarships

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers:

  • Scholarship support
  • Paid research training at the NIH during the summer
  • Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation

SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT

The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for 1 year, and can be renewed up to 4 years.

RESEARCH TRAINING AT THE NIH

For each full or partial scholarship year, you are committed to two NIH service obligations. The obligations are actually benefits of the UGSP, providing you with invaluable research training and experience at the NIH.

  1. 10-week Summer Laboratory Experience. After each year of scholarship support, you will train for 10 weeks as a paid summer research employee in an NIH research laboratory. This employment occurs after the receipt of the scholarship award. Each scholar will be assigned to an NIH researcher and an NIH postdoctoral fellow, who will serve as mentors. You will also attend formal seminars and participate in a variety of programs.
  2. Employment at the NIH after Graduation. After graduation, you will continue your training as a full-time employee in an NIH research laboratory. You must serve 1 year of full-time employment for each year of scholarship.

Buick Achievers Scholarship

The Buick Achievers Scholarship is open for high school seniors, high school graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduate students. The Scholarship program is proudly funded by the GM Foundation. The General Motors college scholarships program rewards students who have succeeded both inside and outside of the classroom and who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance. It’s a reward for what you’ve made of yourself and the difference you are making for others. The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is awarding 50 Buick Achievers Scholarships of up to $25,000 to the winning candidates.

The funds for the scholarship come from the GM Foundation, not the General Motors Company. The GM Foundation is a 501c (3) organization that is separate from GM.

Eligibility for General Motors College Scholarships:

Applicants to the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program must:

  • Be high school seniors, high school graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduate students.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the entire academic year. Proprietary and online schools are not eligible.
  • Plan to major in a course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design related programs of study. You can check list of eligible majors through the given link: https://buickachievers.scholarshipamerica.org/majors.php
  • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries using these areas of study.
  • Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States or Puerto Rico.

  • Activate your account by accessing your email. You may then complete the application by providing information about yourself and your academic achievements.

Supporting Documents:

You may gather the following information that will be necessary for the application:

  • A list of your work experience and involvement in school and community activities
  • Your transcript of grades (online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken)
  • Your parents/guardians’ financial information from their most recently filed tax return or your own financial information if an independent student

Award Amount:

  • The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program will award 50 Buick Achievers Scholarships of up to $25,000 renewable for up to four years, and one additional year for those entering a qualified five year engineering program.
  • The scholarships can be used towards the total cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room and board and other allowable expenses.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 28th class in 2016, the Foundation has provided over 5,700 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $60 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.

So much great stuff. In addition to the monetary award, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation greatly values staying connected to Scholars even after college. The Foundation hosts frequent receptions throughout the country and also invites Scholars from all classes to return to Atlanta for a Leadership Summit every five years to engage in interactive sessions developed by alumni.

What is the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation?

To celebrate Coca-Cola’s centennial in 1986, The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola bottlers came together to fund the Coca−Cola Scholars Foundation. This commitment to education enables the Foundation to support over 1,400 college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.4 million through two nationally recognized programs on behalf of the Coca-Cola System.

The mission of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is to provide scholarship programs and lifelong enrichment opportunities in support of exceptional peoples’ thirst for knowledge and their desire to make a difference in the world.

What scholarships are available to prospective applicants, and who can apply?

CCSF awards funding through three scholarship programs each year:

  1. Coca-Cola Scholars Scholarship – High school seniors with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA may apply on our website in August of their senior year until the October 31 deadline. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.
  2. Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team – 50 Gold $1,500, 50 Silver $1,250 and 50 Bronze $1,000 scholarships. Current students at two-year community colleges may apply between October 1 and December 2. This scholarship is administered by Phi Theta Kappa, and application details can be found on their website, www.ptk.org.
  3. Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise – 180 scholarships of $1,000. Current students at two-year community colleges may apply between February 27 and April 30. This scholarship is administered by Phi Theta Kappa, and application details can be found on their website, www.ptk.org.

How do I apply for the Coca-Cola Scholars Scholarship?

Our application is currently closed and will reopen in August 2017.

The application requires you to list your grades, school and community activities, and employment, but no essays or additional materials are required.

What does the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation look for when selecting recipients?

Coca-Cola Scholars are well-rounded, bright students who not only excel academically, but are also actively involved in their schools. These leaders are passionate and service-oriented, and demonstrate a sustained commitment to bettering their community.

How can the scholarship be used?

This scholarship is unique in that recipients have between 4-10 years to use their full award and may opt to defer all or part of the award within that 10-year timeframe.

In addition to using funds for tuition at an accredited college or university, Scholars may also use their funds for other educational expenses as specified by the Foundation, such as on-campus housing, for a computer, or textbooks.
