Reed Overnight Multicultural Experience (ROME)

About ROME

Each year, the Reed Admission Office offers domestic high school seniors from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds (African-American, Latino/a, Asian-American, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander) an opportunity to apply for a fly-in program called Reed Overnight Multicultural Experience. In 2013, the program will take place November 7-9, and the deadline to apply is September 20. The application is no longer available.

The Program

Accepted students will receive a trip to Reed College for three days and two nights with all expenses paid by the college. ROME students stay on-campus with current students in their dorm rooms. During ROME you will experience Reed’s academic environment firsthand by attending classes and interacting with the community. You’ll get a chance to hang out with Reedies, chat with admission staff, and have tea with professors. If you’re lucky, you might even meet the Doyle Owl! Students will also have the opportunity to meet Portlandia by exploring the plethora of things to do in downtown Portland, Oregon, like visiting Powell’s City of Books, or trying to pick a favorite food cart.

How to Apply

Applying demonstrates your interest in and excitement about Reed. There is no fee to apply for ROME. To be eligible for this fly-in program, you must be a domestic high school senior from a historically underrepresented racial or ethnic background who is a United States citizen or permanent resident. Priority is given to students who have not yet visited Reed. The online application requires two short essays as well as SAT/ACT/PSAT scores. In addition to the completed online application, we also require a high school transcript.

The deadline to apply is September 20, 2013. While the main application is online, there are three methods you can send us any supplemental information:

Kenyon College Diversity Visits

Campus events are a great way to meet admissions staff, attend classes, talk with current students and faculty members, and get an overall picture of life at Kenyon, any time in the application process.

If you are a high school junior in the early stages of your search, we’ve got a special day set aside for you. If you’re interested in science, we encourage you to come spend a day learning about our science programs.

Whether you are able to join us for one of our dedicated visit days listed below or you visit campus on your own, we highly recommend a trip to campus to help you decide if Kenyon is the right place for you!

Registration is mandatory for all visit days. Remember that individual overnight visits are available for high school seniors only.

JUNIOR VISIT DAY – MARCH 22, 2014

This visit day is designed for current high school juniors (high school class of 2015) who are beginning their college search. Come for the day and discover why Kenyon is considered one of the best colleges in the nation. This Saturday event offers information on the college search and advice on applying to colleges, as well as a discussion of the financial aid process. You can also attend panel discussions about academics and campus life, have lunch in a dining hall, and tour campus. ADMITTED STUDENT OVERNIGHT: THUMBS UP PROGRAM I: APRIL 13-14, 2014

This event is specifically for admitted students who would like an overnight experience at Kenyon. You’ll stay overnight with a current student in a residence hall, attend classes, and join panel discussions about life and academics at Kenyon. You can experience the considerable musical talent of our current students at the Kenyon Revue, tour the campus, eat in our dining halls, and attend open houses at a variety of offices on campus. Space is limited, and this program is reserved for students who were admitted under Regular Decision. We ask that students who were accepted under Early Decision visit campus at another time.

Designed for prospective students interested in biology, chemistry, math, neuroscience, physics, and psychology, the schedule on this day highlights our superb science complex and the considerable opportunities that exist in the sciences at Kenyon. Meet members of our faculty, tour the facilities, and talk with Kenyon Summer Science Scholars. You may also take a campus tour and enjoy a great conversation over a picnic lunch.

FALL VISIT DAY 1 – SEPTEMBER 2014 DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

The semester has begun! Current high school seniors and juniors are encouraged to come to campus and speak with students, faculty, and members of the admissions staff. The program for the day includes presentations on the admissions process and financial aid, as well as campus tours, lunch, and a panel of current students regarding life at the College.

FALL OVERNIGHT VISIT PROGRAM – 2014 DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

Fall is a wonderful time to visit Gambier! Limited opportunities for current high school seniors are available to spend the night with a student host, attend classes on Monday, go to panel discussions where you’ll hear from students about academics and extracurricular activities, and tour the campus.

PHYSICS OVERNIGHT PROGRAM – 2014 DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

The Laboratory at the Edge of Reality Visit Weekend is an exciting opportunity for high school seniors* interested in physics to immerse themselves in all things physics at Kenyon.  Throughout the weekend, students will not only learn of the research opportunities at Kenyon and tour the labs of several faculty members but also explore the College, in general, and hear from current students.  Please note that only students who have taken physics or are currently taking physics will be allowed to participate in this program.  If you have not taken physics or are not enrolled but are interested in learning about physics at Kenyon, please schedule a regular overnight experience, and we can connect you with a faculty member at that time.

*Note that juniors are able to come to the overnight as long as they stay in a hotel with their parents.

During the Cultural Connections program you will spend a weekend interacting with current Kenyon students and faculty who may share similar cultural backgrounds with you, and will certainly share your interests. You will also explore the Kenyon community inside and outside of the classroom in interactive ways that will allow you to clearly decipher the role of diversity at Kenyon.

Kalamazoo College Multicultural Fly-in

Multicultural Fly-In Program

If you are a high school senior of multicultural background or you are a student with a strong interest in Diversity and Inclusion, we invite you to spend a couple days on our campus learning more about our dynamic campus community. Kalamazoo College is an increasingly diverse liberal arts college with a focus on challenging academics and experiential education. Our first-year class continues to be diverse in composition, comprised of 24% domestic students of color, 8% international students and 38% students from outside of Michigan.

This year’s program will be offered in conjunction with our regularly scheduled Fall Open House.

Friday, November 8

  • Attend a class
  • Participate in a workshop dialogue about diversity and inclusion
  • Work on your college application
  • Stay overnight with a current student

Saturday, November 9

  • Attend the Fall Open House
  • Listen to presentations on Admissions and the K-Plan
  • Go on a campus tour
  • Interact with other prospective students and families

Space is limited, so there is a short application (see below) for this program.  We will select students based on a variety of factors, including (but not limited to):

  • Academic credentials
  • Interest in a liberal arts education
  • Geography

All applications must be submitted by Friday October 11, 2013.  Participants will be notified of their selection by October 18.

 

Johns Hopkins HOME Diversity Program

Welcome

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is proud to present HOME—an on-campus, overnight program designed for talented, high achieving high school seniors who are from underrepresented cultural backgrounds. It’s a unique opportunity to get a first-hand look at what life at Johns Hopkins is all about, inside and outside of the classroom.

HOME takes place in conjunction with our fall Open House program on Saturday, October 19. All students participating in the HOME program will also enjoy Open House activities. (Please note: Students who are accepted to the HOME program will need to register separately for the Open House. More details will be given in your confirmation e-mail).

Application

Students applying to attend the HOME program must also submit a transcript, SAT/ACT scores (if available), and a recommendation to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The recommendation form can be found here. Transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, and recommendations can be faxed to the attention of: HOME Coordinator at (443) 451-6971 or e-mailed to home.program@jhu.edu. Please note that enrollment for the program is on a space-available basis and submitting an online application does not guarantee program participation. Participation in HOME is not a reflection of any admissions decision and students who do not attend will not be negatively impacted in the admissions process.

Accommodations

Students attending the HOME program are invited to stay overnight in a residence hall room with a current Johns Hopkins student host for the duration of the program. If you have any special requirements, please let us know on your registration form. If your parents would like to visit the campus during your stay for the HOME program, they will need to arrange their own accommodations (see Information for Parents below).

Information for Parents

The HOME program is specifically geared toward prospective students in their senior year of high school. Parents are invited to participate in the Open House on Saturday, October 19. (Please note that separate registration is required for the Open House program.)

Travel Information

Limited monetary travel assistance is available for qualified students. More information on how to request monetary travel assistance for HOME will be provided to students who are accepted for the program.

 

Holy Cross Diversity Overnight

 

 

Perspectives

Perspectives is an overnight program for high school seniors who are interested in learning about diversity and multiculturalism at Holy Cross. Students will be introduced to the multiplicity of people, faiths, viewpoints and ideas that exist at Holy Cross and have the opportunity to discuss their views during classes and panel discussions alongside current students and faculty. They will also have a chance to tour our campus, spend the night in one of our residence halls and eat in Kimball Dining Hall. Ultimately, we hope students will gain a deeper understanding of the College’s diverse community and the many opportunities it has to offer.

This year, the Perspectives program will be held from November 9-11, 2013.

Harvey Mudd College Fall Fast Program

Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST)

September and November

The Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST) programs offer high school seniors from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) an opportunity to experience Harvey Mudd College.

Participants of FAST will stay overnight in one of our residence halls, take a campus tour, sit in on classes, complete an interview with the Office of Admission, participate in a hands-on computer science workshop and much more. There will also be discussions on admission policies, financial aid opportunities, campus resources and the benefits of pursuing a technical degree at a liberal arts college.

The FAST Program is free to all participants and includes lodging, meals and travel accommodations (if applicable). Participants will also receive a fee waiver for a Harvey Mudd College freshman application. Hamilton College Diversity Overnight

Diversity Overnight

The Diversity Overnight program offers students of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to experience life at Hamilton College. Participants in the program will interview with a member of the Hamilton Admission staff and share in a variety of activities on Sunday. On Monday, they will have an opportunity to attend classes and participate in campus life as a Hamilton student.

Acceptance to the program is selective and priority will be given to those who have not already visited Hamilton. Students must be current high school seniors maintaining at least a cumulative B average in a college preparatory curriculum. If admitted, all costs for transportation, meals and lodging will be covered by the College.

To apply, please submit the on-line Diversity Overnight application and a copy of your cumulative high school transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable). Transcripts can be faxed, emailed or mailed to the admission office.

Franklin & Marshall Collegiate Leadership Summit

 

The Collegiate Leadership Summit

Franklin & Marshall College invites high school students from diverse backgrounds with a strong history of leadership to campus to explore their leadership abilities as they transition to a college environment. The Collegiate Leadership Summit is a two-day program that provides selected delegates an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Delegates will interact with members of the F&M community and experience life in a selective liberal arts environment as they participate in leadership oriented workshops, seminars, and group activities. Delegates will also demonstrate their leadership skills through an admission interview and group activities. The cost of travel and attendance is covered by the College.

The Collegiate Leadership Summit will occur twice in the fall semester for high school seniors.

*Nominations for both sessions of the Collegiate Leadership Summit will go live in May.

Candidates

All candidates must be currently enrolled in high school, completing their senior year.

Nomination Requirements

  • A minimum GPA of 3.3 in rigorous classes
  • Must be of a background underrepresented in higher education
  • Must have demonstrated leadership in his or her school or community

Explore the intersection of academics, engagement, and leadership at Dartmouth College.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Dartmouth Bound: Summer Program takes place in July and is designed to provide high school seniors from historically underrepresented backgrounds and communities with an opportunity to preview college by immersion in student life at Dartmouth. Participants will live in a Dartmouth residence hall and will attend workshops on the admissions and financial aid processes. The program encompasses the academic dimensions of Dartmouth by providing access to classes and interaction with our faculty. Also, there will be ample time to enjoy meaningful conversation with current students and staff on how to weave academics, social engagement, and leadership into your college experience.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Admissions officers will walk you through our individualized review process and provide tips for completing college applications. You will have the chance to review real applications to the College as part of a mock admissions committee exercise. Admissions officers will be available to you throughout your stay to address individuals’ questions about the college application process.

In addition to attending regularly scheduled classes, you will attend sessions led by our featured faculty members. These offer a chance for you to hear a faculty member speak about how his or her work contributes to the themes of academics, social engagement, and leadership. Additionally, faculty will show the relevance of undergraduate classes and research to the great issues facing us in the world today.

You’ll have the opportunity to tour the campus, which will help you gain a general orientation of the Dartmouth campus and facilities, as well as specific areas of interest.

Need-based financial aid makes a Dartmouth education affordable for students. Our financial aid officers will provide an overview of the financial aid application process and address how special circumstances are taken into consideration. Admissions and financial aid staff will help you decipher the vocabulary of “full need,” “Early Decision,” “Regular Decision” and other terms that will empower you to make a smart financial choice while navigating the college process.

Throughout your time on campus you will connect with current Dartmouth students who will tell you about their college experience and provide answers to your questions about what campus life is really like.

Current students are eager to host you in one of eight residence halls. Visit classrooms, interact with faculty, explore campus, discover a whole new Charleston, and meet potential future students much like yourself.

As M.O.V.E. is free of charge, space is limited to interested prospective students only.
