Diversity Weekends

Carleton College invites under-represented students to sample one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation.  Visit a class, meet current students, explore our campus, meet with faculty members, and stay overnight with a student host.  You’ll also meet other high school seniors excited about getting a taste of Carleton.

What happens at the Taste of Carleton?

Thursday

• Arrive at Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport by 5 p.m. and take a shuttle to Northfield.
• Attend a welcome reception and meet your student host.

Friday

• Attend a class that suits your interests: anything from Principles of Psychology, to Genes and Evolution, toLatinas in Hollywood.
• Explore campus, tour the 880 acre Arboretum, chat with students in the Sayles-Hill student center, or attend our weekly convocation.
• Have an interview with a member of the admissions staff.
• Get your student life questions answered by current students at a Q&A session.
• Sample Carleton’s night life.

Saturday

• Savor a final morning at Carleton before the shuttles depart for the airport.

Each applicant must return the completed application form and a high school transcript (with senior schedule) to be considered.

The Explore Bowdoin program offers high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to visit Bowdoin’s campus. Because we understand that traveling may pose a significant financial burden for many families, the College covers the entire cost of the trip, including all transportation and meals.

There are two program dates available: September and November. For both programs, students spend Thursday to Sunday on the Bowdoin College campus. The deadlines for the the program applications are August and September respectively. Participants stay with current students in campus housing, attend classes, receive personal admissions interviews, and attend information sessions on admissions and financial aid.

Explore Bowdoin Application

In addition to completing the online application, students will need to send a copy of their transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable) for consideration.  The transcript must be received by the deadline for the application to be considered complete.  Applicants will be notified, via email, the week following the application deadline regarding our selections.

Prologue: Open House Program for First-Generation-to-College Students and/or Students of Color

Three days on us to enjoy a slice of what Bates College has to offer. During the overnight program, designed by the Bates Office of Admission for first-generation-to-college and/or underrepresented high school seniors, you will:

• Attend a class of your choosing
• Stay with current Bates students
• Meet Bates faculty and staff
• Tour Bates’ beautiful, 109-acre campus
• Catch an information session
• Participate in an admission interview
• Attend academic, athletic, cultural and co-curricular events

Barnard Bound provides a taste of both Barnard College and New York City for promising high school seniors who self-identity as students of color and/or who couldn’t otherwise afford to visit.  Participants spend the first day touring parts of Manhattan and experiencing its rich diversity of culture, neighborhoods, and of course, food, returning to campus to get a feel for student life and discovering more about Barnard the next day during Open House. The program also introduces students to important details about our admissions and financial aid processes. It’s our goal to help your students learn as much as they can about our unique and vibrant community. We hope that your students will also see that Barnard is both affordable and attainable.

Students must complete the online Barnard Bound Student Application.  Please note that students will be unable to save and return to this application before submission, so they should be prepared to complete and submit their application in one sitting.

In addition to the application, students must be nominated by a guidance counselor or mentor at a college access organization using the Barnard Bound Adviser Recommendation. We hope you can help us find intellectually curious students who are independent thinkers and would benefit from the mentorship and support that Barnard provides. Finally, a transcript must be sent with the nomination form (this may be an unofficial transcript). Transcripts and forms may be scanned and emailed or faxed.

All applications, adviser forms and transcripts are due by TBA.  They may be sent by e-mail or by fax (to 212-854-6220).  Please do not send forms or transcripts via postal mail.

Program participation is limited, but travel scholarships are available for students outside of the New York City metro area who demonstrate financial need and meet Barnard Bound admission criteria.  Advisers and students will be asked for basic financial information at the time of application to determine qualifications. Travel scholarship recipients will be notified at the time of program admission.

Expenses for program-related events, subway passes, and meals will be covered by Barnard College for all attendees.

As part of Amherst College’s commitment to diversity, the Office of Admission hosts two weekend Diversity Open Houses (DIVOH) in the fall to introduce prospective applicants to Amherst’s campus, student body, faculty, classes, and residence halls. Up to 100 students are selected to attend each weekend. The Diversity Open Houses are available to all prospective students, but the selection committee prioritizes the invitation of students from traditionally under-represented groups, such as African-American, Hispanic/Latino American, Native American, and Asian-American backgrounds, as well as first-generation students. To support socio-economic diversity, the selection committee will also invite and prioritize students with limited family financial resources, regardless of cultural or racial background.  The above-mentioned are priorities, and are not meant to imply any exclusivity regarding the program or selection process.  Should you have an interest in attending, we encourage you to apply no matter your demographic or economic background.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Students selected to visit Amherst for a DIVOH weekend will receive 100% of round-trip transportation costs (airline, bus, or train) for DIVOH attendance and will be hosted on campus by current students. Typically, seventy-five percent of the students who attend one of our DIVOH programs choose to apply to Amherst, although they are under no obligation to do so. A fee waiver of the $60 application fee is provided to all students invited to attend a DIVOH weekend. Some students who apply to the Open House will also receive a waiver for the Amherst College $60 application fee in order to encourage their applications to Amherst, regardless of whether they are invited to attend the Open House.

Special programming for the DIVOH weekends includes information sessions with admission deans, a faculty panel, and opportunities to attend classes and interact with current Amherst College students, faculty and staff. To apply for attendance at one of the upcoming Fall 2013 DIVOH weekends, please complete and submit our online DIVOH Application. The application deadline for both DIVOH weekends is Friday, August 16, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. (EST).

To be eligible for the programs, you must:

• be a high school senior in the fall of 2013
• reside in the U.S.
• complete a DIVOH application (essay required)
• submit a copy of your transcript (an unofficial one will be accepted) through your junior year

We know that the opportunity to visit campus is an important factor in identifying whether Cornell would provide what you are looking for in your college experience. The 2013 Fall Women in Engineering Hosting Program (WIE) is a great chance for you to come see what the College of Engineering and greater Cornell University campus have to offer!

This overnight hosting program will take place Thursday, September 26 – Saturday, September 28, 2013 and will provide you with an insider’s view into life as a Cornell Engineer. During Fall WIE you will have the opportunity to:

• stay in a residence hall with a current student;
• learn details about the admission process;
• attend a class;
• participate in an interactive lab demonstration; and
• interact with faculty, staff, and students.

Additionally, you will be able to engage with members of several of our award-winning engineering student organizations including:

• Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
• Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers ( SHPE)
• Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers (SASE)
• National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
• American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES)

Notes about the program

• This program is for high school senior women (graduating in Spring 2014 only).
• There is no cost for the program except for your own travel to campus.  However, you may be eligible to apply for a travel grant to cover some or all of your travel expenses. Once you have been accepted into the program you, will receive instructions on how to apply for these travel grants.
• This is an application-based, space-limited, selective program.  Though it is not equivalent to admission into Cornell University, we are looking for students that show promise of being a member of the freshman class.
• Because we require one year each of Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology for our freshman admissions, we are also requiring these for our hosting program.  Note that these are requirements for you to fulfill before high school graduation, so taking them in Senior year still fulfills the requirement.

A. Essay

You will be asked for a completed essay of 400-500 words in the application.  Because you are expected to enter the essay in the midst of your application, please have your response ready before you fill out the application so that you are prepared to enter the essay when asked.  This year’s essay prompt is:

B. Completed Junior Year High School Transcript

You will be asked to upload a copy of your transcript (official, unofficial, or copies of your 9,10, and 11 grade report cards – whichever you have access to).  These must have final grades for 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.  If you have not yet finished your Junior year, you should wait to apply for WIE until you have your completed final grades.  Because you are expected to upload your transcript in the midst of your application, please have your document(s) ready before you fill out the application so that you are prepared to upload your transcript when asked.

Program Notification

• Fully completed applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis throughout June/July.
• Decision notification will also be on a rolling basis throughout July.
• A portion of our applicants may not be notified until Monday, July 29 when all final decisions will be released via e-mail.
• All selection decisions will include important details for the program, including how to apply for travel grants and how to make travel arrangements.
