Full Scholarships to HBCUs

Our step-by-step college planning approach to guiding students into full scholarships and avoiding student loan debt is based on the comprehensive set of strategies presented by Mychal Wynn in HBCU Scholarships…and more*

As an eighteen year old high school student, I was unaware of how I would pay for my college education and pursue my goals of becoming a Physical Therapist.

As a triplet, paying for 3 children entering college at the same time, would have placed a huge financial burden on my parents. It was not until Mr. and Mrs. Wynn urged me to explore HBCUs and apply for the Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholarship at North Carolina A&T State University that my path became clear and my parents’ financial burden would be lessened.

Prior to applying to an HBCU, I had no prior knowledge of the many merit-based full ride scholarships offered by NC A&T and other HBCUs, like the full scholarship that one of my sisters received from Claflin University. However, Mr. and Mrs. Wynn urged me to research these programs, informed me of the Dowdy scholarship, guided me throughout my application process, and prepared me for the scholarship interview. While in high school, I was a varsity basketball player for both my high school and AAU teams and was committed to developing a deep understanding of bodily movement, exercise, and nutrition. After receiving my acceptance letter to North Carolina A&T, I was excited about the experiences that I anticipated gaining by attending an HBCU on my pathway toward becoming a physical therapist. Over my four years of participating in the kinesiology program at NC A&T, I have been impressed by the growth and development the program has undergone, the leadership and professional experience that I have gained, and the quality of education that I have received.
