Description

Developing study skills and learning strategies: Research-driven study skills and brain-based learning strategies developed for students ranging from grades K-12, community college, college, graduate school, to adults returning to school. The following steps will be adjusted based on the grade or education level and specific needs of the student. (1) Students are provided with a copy of Career or College Pathways: Study Skills and Learning Strategies. (2) The student is required to complete a questionnaire exploring their daily approach to studying and learning. The student is also provided a table to complete, which maps the activities and times allocated during a typical 24-hour day. (3) We review the student’s responses to the questionnaire, daily schedule, résumé, transcript, standardized test score reports (PSAT, SAT, ACT, or ASVAB), and class schedule. (4) We host the first of 3 meetings with the student and parents, during which we discuss any recommended changes to the student’s approach to studying and learning. During this meeting, we ask the student to choose 1-3 strategies that they are willing to incorporate into their daily study routine. (5) We ask the student to choose their most difficult class, for which they will follow a recommended Study Cycle throughout the semester. (6) We ask parents to monitor the student’s application of the chosen strategies and implementation of the Study Cycle for 1 week. (6) We host the second of 3 meetings, during which we discuss the student’s success in implementing the strategies and following the Study Cycle, as well as any results experienced by the student. During this meeting, we ask the student to choose an additional 1-3 strategies that they are willing to incorporate into their daily study routine. (7) We ask parents to monitor the student’s application of both the old and new strategies and continue following the Study Cycle for 1 week. (8) We host the final of the 3 meetings during which we discuss the student’s success in implementing the strategies and following their Study Cycle, as well as any results experienced by the student.
